Poor

In Poor, Caleb Femi combines poetry and original photography to explore the trials, tribulations, dreams, and joys of young Black boys in twenty-first century Peckham.

Caleb Femi's Poor looks at life in North Peckham in a beautiful and moving way. My favourite aspect of this collection of poems is how experimental, emotional and innovative they are. The use of modern hip hop lyrics makes it feel accessible and subverts expectations with form. The themes are rich, ranging from racism, gentrification, community, and classism. Poor focuses on black boys and gives them softness, vulnerabilities. This debut collection is powerful and nuanced storytelling that is worth a read!
