The Chimp Paradox

This is one of the best self-help books I’ve read. Peters brilliantly ties together the world of psychology and everyday human function for a successful, happy life. As someone who is not scientifically inclined, I was able to understand both the prefrontal cortex and limbic systems when broken down and described as the Human and Chimp respectively. I jokingly like to describe it as a science for dummies book.

There were so many amazing take-ways. Not only did this book allowed me to explore my inner mind, but also how to relate to others. This being, how to effectively communicate and chose the right support network. My best takeaway was the importance of controlling your chimp, which can be difficult for emotionally driven beings. Throughout the book, Peters gave practical examples and steps towards being emotionally intelligent. For example, Part 1, Chapter 3 suggests ways to manage your emotional side – your chimp: Take the chimp to a locked compound, let it all out, listen to your chimp and don’t complain.

Peters writing excellently draws one it. With each chapter, I learned something new about myself and how to navigate through emotionally driven situations. He touched on various aspects of life including dealing with stress, building confidence, and improving your health. I highly recommend this book as a must read. With time and proper application, this book offers a better version of yourself.
